The collection comprises the principal Russo-Japanese War photographic album in twenty-four parts (volumes one through twenty-four, twenty-nine albums in all), together with an album of the Port Arthur fighting photographed by a Russian officer, an album of the war drawn by leading Western artists from life, and a three-part naval photographic album of the war recorded by the photographic section of Imperial General Headquarters, dated to 1904–05.
Photographic records of this scope, assembling the work of multiple photographic sections and even an opposing officer's lens, offer an unusually layered primary view of the conflict — the land campaigns about Port Arthur, the naval war, and the contemporary Western pictorial response, side by side.
