Photograph Album of a Pre-War Railwayman — Approximately 250 Mounted Photographs, c. 1935

A moving personal photograph album assembled by a pre-war railway employee, holding approximately two hundred and fifty mounted photographs that appear to span service at Higashine Station in Yamagata Prefecture and a later posting at Boketu Station in Manchuria. Among the images are two views taken before Boketu Station, four showing Manchurian steam locomotives, and many more recording the daily life of the railwayman, his family, and his associates across both the Japanese and Manchurian chapters of his working life.

Vernacular albums of this kind — private, first-hand, and unrepeatable — are among the most valuable of primary sources, preserving the lived texture of a frontier railway career in a way no official record can. The presence of original period photographs, from station platforms to family scenes, carries the immediacy of the time directly to the viewer. For historians of the South Manchuria sphere, of railway labour, and of prewar East Asian photography, it is a documentary treasure.

A genuine and affecting album of the period, of clear appeal to collectors of prewar East Asian photography and Northeast Asian historical materials.

Offered by KT Vintage, drawing on decades of trusted international sales to discerning collectors and institutions across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania.
