Harbin and Its Customs: An On-Site Photographic Collection — 1943

An on-site photographic collection of Harbin and its customs, taken by Fujii Kinjiro and published in 1943. Compiled from photographs made in the city itself, the work assembles a contemporary visual record of Harbin's streets, manners, and daily life in the closing years of the Manchukuo era — a primary pictorial document of the city as it was actually seen and recorded on the ground.

This is the first edition. As a first-hand photographic survey, the collection preserves the appearance and texture of wartime Harbin at a defined and late moment in its history, of clear value to historians of the city, of pre-war and wartime photography, and of the social life of the Northeast. On-site photographic collections of this kind, made and issued in the final years of the period, are uncommon survivals.

A genuine and evocative photographic record, well suited to a serious collection of pre-war China photography and East Asian historical materials.

Offered by KT Vintage, drawing on decades of trusted international sales to discerning collectors and institutions across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania.
