Handbook of the Harbin Railway Bureau — 1936

An official handbook of the Harbin Railway Bureau, issued by the bureau itself in 1936. The leaflet presents a concise institutional overview of the railway administration governing the lines around Harbin, with its operating statistics current as of the first of July of that year. It draws together an outline of the bureau, the conditions of its several lines, summaries of the principal cities along their routes, the resources within the territories they served, and an account of the founding of the Chinese Eastern Railway and its transfer.

The handbook is furnished with a colour-printed industrial map of the several lines, setting the railway network of the region against the resources it traversed. Official bureau handbooks of this kind were produced for institutional and operational use, preserving a fixed reading of the railway administration of the Northeast at a particular moment.

As a primary source on the organisation and reach of the Harbin railway network, the leaflet is of clear value to historians of railways, of the South Manchuria Railway sphere, and of the Northeast. Ephemeral institutional leaflets of this kind survive only sparingly.

A genuine railway document of the period, well suited to a serious collection of South Manchuria Railway and East Asian historical materials.

Offered by KT Vintage, drawing on decades of trusted international sales to discerning collectors and institutions across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania.
